Basic Background to Virgil's Aeneid - YouTube - 22 minutes



Now watch the following video on Vergil’s Aeneid, which gives more detail than the text in your book.  The narrator’s voice sounds a bit flat at the beginning but picks up as he goes on.  Try not to be turned off.  The content is solid.

The narrator divides his presentation into three parts:
n  The Historical Background of the Aeneid
n  The Mythological Background
n  The Literary Background

Write down these categories and record whatever strikes you as interesting or important in each section.  You can also record questions you have.

Nouns and their Cases

Latin nouns have various endings.  The endings are determined by what DECLENSION (noun family) they belong to. There are five declensions.   The endings signal the role of the noun in a sentence: subject, possessive, indirect object, direct object and object of a preposition.  These roles and their forms are called CASES. There are other roles too, but you don't need to worry about those yet.    The dictionary form of a noun appears with the nominative, the genitive and the gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) of the noun.  E.g. puella, puellae, f.
